Summer - Fall 2023 Class Schedule available. Build the Eliphalet Chapin High Chest with Will Neptune
Chapin High Chests are a unique expression of Rococo design ideas. Inspired by his experience in Philadelphia, the High Chests made by the shop of Eliphalet Chapin rely on flowing lines and restrained details rather than the heavier form and detailed carving seen in Philadelphia examples. These pieces present a wide array of technical challenges for a furniture maker, from the complex joinery typically employed by Chapin to the graceful shaping and carving that were fundamental to his work. Distinctive details that are so important to this piece are the ball and claw feet, vine carved drawer front and the truly unique rooster cartouche. The magnitude of this project may seem a little daunting but like most projects, it can be broken down into a series of simpler tasks with a clear sequence of steps. Even the impressive pediment is built up in layers with several sub assemblies.
If you have ever thought of building this high point of Connecticut furniture, this is your chance. The unique one weekend a month (12 months) format allows for plenty of class time which includes all of the machining and dimensioning of parts, any machine cut joinery along with demonstrations and practice pieces for the carved elements and hand-cut joints. Be prepared to do a fair amount of handwork at home. This allows us to utilize valuable class time for more important tasks while allowing you to do the handwork in your own shop at your own pace. The duration of this class is actually over one year which will require a significant commitment by each student.
